Today is Terrible so I will talk about my favorite outfits from "Crazy Rich Asians"
only 1,461 days left
On days like today, I can’t help but think about the people who complained they couldn’t afford eggs and yet spent thousands of dollars traveling to Washington, D.C. just for their overlord to shun them to Capital One Arena bc he doesn’t want anyone to watch his in**********. Sounds like you can afford groceries several times over.
But we persist and life moves on and even though I will be THIRTY-FOUR by the time this is all over, we will still have my favorite outfits from Crazy Rich Asians. I fucking love this movie and it is in general one of the best rom-coms to ever exist. I have broken down the genius of the mahjong scene at the end for everyone who will watch the movie with me. I am hiding under Jon Chu’s bed until I get the sequels. I can’t say enough how much this movie means to me.
Rachel Chu
It’s a bummer that she is the main character and yet has to have the most lowkey wardrobe out of everyone (even though she is sporting some labels on the DL). So by virtue, she is overall has my favorite wardrobe in the entire movie.
Red Miu Miu Dress
Meant to be the dress to meet Nick’s grandma in, Rachel stops by Awkwafina’s house in this red Miu Miu dress. It’s so cute. I love the color, the cap sleeves, and the back. I also wear red when I need a touch of good luck. It’s just an adorable dress that I would wear in a heartbeat.
Gold Missoni Dress
When she rolls up to Nick’s grandma’s house in this, omg stunning. I don’t even like halter necklines but I would also wear this in a heartbeat. Just absolutely beautiful. I’m not sure if this was intentional but the colors she wears are reflected in the characters around her: Eleanor wears brown and Astrid wears blue. So she has a through line through the family, whether they like it or not. Regardless, it’s a beautiful look.
Araminta’s Bachelorette Airport Outfit
I can’t find any details about it but I just find it very cute. I really like the top.
Astrid Leong
Ah my queen. I don’t like her style in a very envious way (I mean, I’d love to take a look at her accessories) but Gemma Chan is just so beautiful it’s hard not to love her looks.
Pink Dior
Like come on. She oozes wealth, yet not confidence, and keeps herself hidden with the sunglasses because she doesn’t like to show off her money to her stupid husband. The one qualm is the Valentino rockstuds but it’s just a beautiful, pristine look. I can’t.
Pink Alexander McQueen
She wears a lot of pink and blue in this movie. Funnily enough, Rachel is wearing a blue Marchesa dress to the wedding. This is a beautiful dress and she looks amazing in it. There really is not much to say when Gemma Chan is wearing something because it’s just pretty. Like that’s it. I don’t think I could pull off this color but I really love the collar. Also where is my Astrid spinoff that I was promised?
Blue Ralph Lauren Dress
This is the best photo I could find but come onnnnn. I absolutely love this. She discovers Michael is cheating on her here so it makes sense she’s wearing a duller, simpler dress. I absolutely love this.
Araminta Lee
She’s a fun character and I think the actress is so pretty. She really only has two big scenes: the bachelorette party and the wedding. And so I only include two outfits here: the bachelorette party and the wedding.
Gold Jumpsuit
I think the jumpsuit would’ve looked better with a flared leg instead of being a cropped, tight leg but the entire point is to be loud and tacky and she gets the job done. She looks fabulous.
Wedding Dress by Mary E. Vogt
If we’re being honest, the dress is kind of ugly but in a noveau riche kind of way. This is one of the best, if not the best, movie weddings of all time so what can you do. Iconique.
Eleanor Young
She has some fun looks, obviously.
Pinstripe Ralph Lauren (or Armani, conflicting reports) Suit
She wears this neutral suit to meet Rachel before she gets absolutely slaughtered in mahjong. And I love it. I *think* this is the only time she wears black and white in the movie. It also offsets Rachel’s outfit (a blue floral dress). Everything about that scene is just amazing. Anyways, I’d wear this.
Blue Elie Saab Dress
According to the costume designer, Eleanor’s dress was originally supposed to be green (with envy) but because of the tall grass in the church, they had to pivot and Michelle Yeoh had just been gifted this Elie Saab. But I think it works because it says so much more having her wear the same color as Rachel does to the wedding. Eleanor wants to get rid of Rachel (“you will never be enough”) but sorry, they actually have more in common than Eleanor would like (namely, Nick). Also, also, if we want to take it a step further, Rachel reclaims the blue for herself during the mahjong game, and the transfer of power is made complete when Eleanor cedes her ring.
Green Diane Von Furstenberg Blouse
It’s mumsy for sure but like she’s a mom. I personally wouldn’t wear it but I just really love the rich green surrounded by all the softer greens in the house. She just looks really powerful, especially compared to Rachel’s frothy floral dress.
In conclusion,
I hope one day a long-form YouTuber who is smarter than me does a full fashion analysis of this movie. Also we should all just watch the movie again. Maybe we can Netflix Party it so I can give you my spiel about the mahjong scene.
Anyways, I hope everyone has a peaceful day.
The fashion in this movie are honestly elite
