Omg…I’m so bad at this. I forgot that I also read another book at the beginning of April. Also, I’m so sorry, but SYM will be more sporadic than you’re probably used to for the foreseeable future. HMU for specific hot takes. I’ll do a catch-up on all the hot goss sometime next week.
Things I Read (in April)
Sunrise on the Reaping.
The more I think about it, the more ass it is. I have very high hopes for the movie and every casting announcement has slayed but I found this…como se dice…pointless. I stole this from a Goodreads review but the book really should have been Haymitch’s life from winning the games to meeting Katniss. Like still plant the seeds of the rebellion from his games (like I will accept he meets Wiress OR Mags OR Beetee but meeting all of them was ridiculous to me) and then maybe we see the hopeful fruits of rebellion in the few years after his games and then the dreadful discovery nothing will happen through his downward spiral and then the book ends with him meeting Katniss and Peeta. And I understand it’s nice to see all of them just so we know how long the seeds of the rebellion have been planted but it was just too fan servicey for me. A bad case of prequel brain.
The book improved significantly once we got to the actual games and I loved some of the characters (Maysilee my queen) but I think if Suzanne had thought about it a bit more, she could’ve crafted a very good story with the material. But I fear she had minimal to say with this one. Felt more like a means to an end (a new movie).
Things I Read (in May)
Great Big Beautiful Life.
Technically I finished this April 30 but I said in my April post that I’d talk about it in May. Mwah mwah adored. We already know this.
Book Lovers.
Plane book. Good shit.
Things I Watched (in April)
Sinners.
MASSIVE SLAY. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. You have TWO (2) Michael B. Jordans and also Bo Chow. Hailee Steinfeld also excellent. Music? MARVELOUS. Everything about it was amazing. I won’t say anything about the plot bc it’s very fun if you go into it completely blind but I implore everyone go see it. If not for Michael B. Jordan, then at least for me.
Things I Watched (in May)
Thunderbolts*.
The first Marvel movie I have seen since…Guardians of the Galaxy 3. I’m pretty tapped out atp but I really enjoyed this. Recommended viewing is Black Widow and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier but I haven’t watched either and it was fine. Love a good ensemble cast, especially Bob.
Until Dawn.
This was fun. I went with Caitlin and as horror movie aficionados, we both agreed this was actually quite scary. It’s based off of a video game (starring Rami Malek, randomly) but I think it was meant to be a shared universe, rather than a direct adaptation. The key to a good horror movie is you need the characters to not be fucking idiots and for the most part, they weren’t. I probably wouldn’t watch this again but I had a lot of fun.
Oppenheimer.
I watched this as I packed. Still good.
The Parent Trap.
Good plane movie. I am continuously floored that I am supposed to be older than Meredith Blake. This movie makes me wish I went to summer camp. The two most popular camps that people in Grosse Pointe went to were a horse camp (Black River? I think?) and a Christian one (SpringHill). I actually heavily considered just pretending to believe in God bc all my friends went to SpringHill and it looked so fun but I never got around to it.
The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants.
Another good plane movie. I think I only read the first 4 books in the original series so a few years ago I read the plot summary to the last one and dear god.
I very much love this movie. Legitimately America Ferrera’s phone call to Bradley Whitford is some of her best acting. It was always a weird choice to me that they made Bridget the oldest in the movie when Blake Lively was the youngest by several years. But give me a third movie, you cowards.
I’d say I’m a Lena sun, Carmen moon, and Tibby rising.
